Arsenal endured their worst league season for a long time during the 1994- 1995 campaign. Despite Ian Wright being prolific in front of goal, the Gunners crashed in the league to a disappointing 12th position finish. George Graham left the managerial post mid way through the season with Stewart Houston temporarily taking charge at the club. They were poor in the FA cup and reached the quarter finals of the league cup narrowly losing 1-0 against Liverpool.
The Gunners installed Bruce Rioch as their new manager at the start of the 1995- 1996 campaign and their performances had considerably improved at Arsenal, improving on the debacle of the previous season finishing off the campaign in fifth place. David Platt and Dennis Bergkamp signed for the club at the start of the season and they were in outstanding form. The Gunners also managed to reach the semi finals in the League cup and were most unfortunate to lose against Aston Villa on penalties.
The start of the 1996-1997 season witnessed the arrival of Patrick Viera and Nicolas Anelka at the club and many players left Arsenal, including, Andy Linighan, John Jensen and David Hiller. Also the season was most notable for the arrival of their new French manager, Arsene Wenger. Arsenal improved considerably in the league finishing the campaign off in third place. David Seamen was inspiring in goal for the Gunners and Ian Wright once again enjoyed a prolific goal scoring season. The Gunners narrowly lost to Chelsea in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Wenger bought some more new players to the club at the start of the 1997- 98 season, including, Marc Overmars, Gilles Grimandi and Emmanual Petit. The Gunners were emphatic in the league as they won the league title for the first time in seven years beating Manchester United to the title. They achieved the ‘double’, as a Tony Adam’s inspired Arsenal side defeated Newcastle United 2-0 in the FA Cup final.
