The match started off at a frantic pace as their were a series of nasty challenges, most notably one from Peter Storey, who left Steve Highway on the turf, which in turn slowed up the winger for the rest of the encounter. The score line remained goal less at half time and mid way through the second half period, both teams made substitutions, both teams bringing attackers on. With two minutes of normal time left, George Graham lept high to head past Ray Clemence, however the ball came back off the crossbar and Graham smash the ball goal wards only to see it cleared off the line. Two minutes into extra time, a telling through ball put Steve Highway clear and he cut into the penalty box going past Bob Wilson who shot home to make it 1-0 to the Liverpool. Ten minutes into extra time, Radford made a fierce overhead kick which was helped on into the Liverpool area by Eddie Kelly and George Graham fired home to equalize. Only moments later, Charlie George hit a sizzling winner to crown the Gunners as FA Cup champions of 1971.

After only three minutes of the tie, Ipswich came close as Clive Woods headed down in the box and Paul Mariners razor sharp shot along the ground shaved the post. Arsenal’s finest opportunity came when Sammy Nelson was put clean through. With the Ipswich goal keeper, Cooper, drawn out of position, Nelson squandered the shot. With twenty minutes of the match left, Woods laid a shot on for Wark who smacked the drive on to the post. With 15 minutes left, George Burley headed a fine ball which was well saved by Pat Jennings.
The 77th minute saw Ipswich score the winner as Roger Osbourne collected a pass by David Geddis to smash into the back of the net.
