Cliff Bastin

In 1929 Bastin was signed by Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman from Exeter City. He went on to become an invaluable player for Arsenal in the 1930’s winning with Arsenal the league one title on five occasions and the FA cup twice. He scored 178 goals in 395 games and was Arsenal’s record goalscorer for nearly 60 years, Ian Wright eclipsing his record in 1997. This is despite playing as a left winger rather than as a traditional centre forward and the Second World War curtailing his career. Cliff Bastin scored 12 goals in 21 games for England. Notably, Bastin scored the first goal for England in a pre-war time friendly against Germany where the England players where gave a Nazi salute. He died in 1991 at the age of 79.
