Arsenal FC were created as Dial Square in 1886 by the employees at a governments armed factory in Woolwich, south east London. As Woolwich Arsenal, playing their football at Manor Ground, they earned admission in to the second division in the year 1893. They were the first league club formed that was south of Birmingham. In the year 1919 the club went into liquidation, but a new football club was formed immediately. After a very poor 1912- 1913 football season, a ruthless property dealer of the name of Sir Henry Norris moved the club to Highbury in North London. ‘Woolwich’ was dropped and the clubs new name was called ‘Arsenal.’ Arsenal was elected in to the top flight in the year 1919 and have remained there ever since, to this day.
Arsenal's golden period started with the appointment of Herbert Chapman as their manager in the year 1935. Chapman revolutionised the club and introduced many innovations to the game in general. Arsenal won five league titles and two FA Cups during the 1930’s, establishing themselves as the main force in English football. After World War 2 they won the league title at the end of the 1947- 1948 campaign, a title they had now won six times. They won the FA Cup at the end of the 1949- 1950 season under the guidance of their manager Tom Whittaker.
