George Graham

George Graham is a manager who has great belief in the requirement of a strong defensive base in a team. Graham managed to totally revitalise Arsenal in his 8 year spell at the club. Graham lead Arsenal to two league titles, the FA cup and the European cup Winners cup as well as two league cups. Graham left Arsenal in 1995 in controversy following the discovery of him taking a £0.42M bung from a Norwegian agent on signing two players.

Tom Whittaker

Tom Whittaker guided Arsenal to the league titles in the 1947-48 and 1952-53 seasons, as well as the FA cup in the 1949-50 season. He however did not reach the same heights with Arsenal later in the 1950’s; with the team in decline his health suffered as a result. Whittaker died of a heart attack in 1956.

Bertie Mee

Bertie Mee joined Arsenal as a physiotherapist in 1960. Arsenal surprisingly appointed Mee as manager in 1966 following the sacking of Billy Wright. He lead Arsenal to two successive league cup finals in 1968 and 1969, however both were lost. In 1970 he lead Arsenal to their first European cup of any kind, guiding them to win the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The league and FA cup double was then won in the following season. Following this however the club slowly declined into mid-table and Mee handed in his resignation in 1976. Mee died at the age of 81 in 2001.

Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger is Arsenal’s most successful ever manager. Wenger joined Arsenal after a successful spell at Japanese side Nagoya Grampus Eight. Wenger’s second season in charge saw Arsenal win the FA Cup and league double. Arsenal won the double again in the 2001-02 season. Arsenal won the FA cup in the following season. In the 2003-04 season won the Premiership title in remarkable fashion, without a single loss, this team were nicknamed “the invincibles”. Arsenal again won the FA cup in 2005 and reached the Champions League final in the following season losing to Barcelona 2-1. Wenger has built a reputation of signing unknown gems for lowly amounts and turning them into world class talents, this includes the signings of Emmanuel Petit, Nicolas Anelka and Kolo Toure. Wenger managed to transform Arsenal into one of the top clubs in Europe and this has been reflected with their move to the new Emirates Stadium in the 2006-07 season.
